‘David’

Angel Studios’ “David” arrives as an animated musical retelling of the biblical figure whose life moves from quiet shepherding to public leadership. The film traces familiar ground — David’s anointing, his battle with Goliath and the early shaping of his character — while aiming for a tone that works for families without flattening the story’s emotional weight.

Directed by Phil Cunningham and Brent Dawes, “David” builds on Angel Studios’ earlier work in faith-based storytelling but steps into new territory with animation and music at the center. Phil Wickham voices the adult David, with Brandon Engman portraying him as a boy. Wickham has said the project offered a chance to “tell a timeless story in a way that really leans into the music and character.”

Early responses highlight a variety of perspectives. Some reviews note the film’s color, music and effort to make the story accessible for families and younger audiences. At the same time, others are using the film to talk about broader trends in faith-based media and what families can expect in terms of content and pacing.

Rated PG and positioned as a family-oriented musical drama, “David” aims to present a familiar story in a format designed for broad appeal this holiday season.
