Cory Asbury

After several years away from worship music, Cory Asbury is returning to familiar ground with “Outsing the Angels,” a new 15-track album released September 18. The project follows a stretch in which Asbury had been working toward a country record before ultimately deciding to scrap it and return to writing worship music.

That shift shapes much of “Outsing the Angels.” Songs including “Holy God,” “My Closest Friend,” “All Saints” and the title track center on worship, God’s nearness and rediscovering a less guarded kind of faith. Asbury has described the record as a return to some of the passion he remembers from his younger years.

“This record is beautiful. It feels like a call back to youth and zeal, and that passion that you used to feel as a kid,” Asbury said.

The title track carries that idea further, with Asbury describing “Outsing the Angels” as a call to wholehearted, even slightly unruly worship — the kind that isn’t overly concerned with appearances.

Rather than trying to recreate the success of “Reckless Love,” “Outsing the Angels” finds Asbury settling back into the kind of music he says he was called to make in the first place.
