Angel Studios’ new film, “Homestead,” takes viewers to a world where survival meets morality. Directed by Ben Smallbone, the film explores life after a nationwide blackout, where resources are scarce and trust even scarcer. The story follows a community grappling with the collapse of societal systems and asks hard questions about faith, love and neighborly care in the face of adversity.

Smallbone captures the tension of survival with a faith-centered lens, inviting audiences to reflect on how they would respond when stripped of modern comforts. “It’s easy to love your neighbor when you have resources to love your neighbor with,” Smallbone notes. “But what if all of that is taken away? … How do you take care of your neighbor when your neighbor might threaten the life of yourself or your children?”

“Homestead” offers a gritty portrayal of the human condition while weaving in themes of forgiveness, sacrifice and resilience. As much a character study as a survival thriller, the film doesn’t shy away from the spiritual and ethical complexities of its premise. For Smallbone, it’s less about answering questions and more about starting conversations relevant to today’s world — a thoughtful challenge for audiences to take home.
