Joby Martin
Joby Martin’s new book “Stand Firm & Act Like Men” offers a grounded look at masculinity through the lens of the Gospel. Martin writes, “Let’s you and I dive in and really ask God to help us understand what it means to stand up and act like a man, and then let’s do that.”
Drawing from The Bible passage 1 Corinthians 16:13 — “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” — Martin challenges cultural definitions of manhood, pointing instead to surrender, service and love as the core of biblical manhood.
The book unpacks what it means to lead well in your home, church and community without buying into the “bigger-truck, bigger-gun” stereotype. It also highlights practical truths such as the danger of isolation, the call to worship and the importance of brothers who see your real life. (One sample: “Men are expert isolationists… You were created in the image of God, and God said it is not good that man be alone.”)
Martin’s tone stays conversational — he doesn’t lecture so much as invite: “What is the man God created you to be, instead of who the world says you are?”
The result is practical and personal: for men who want clarity in a culture that often muddles their role, Martin offers a guide to living out faith with strength, humility and love.
